Embracing the Spirit of Marathon Running
December 2023 marked a significant milestone for Seth DeMoor and the DeMoor Global Running team as they participated in the prestigious California International Marathon (CIM) in Sacramento California. This event not only showcased the athletic prowess of many DGR runners but also their commitment to the ever-growing marathon racing family. "The fastest course in the West" was anything but for Seth's final results, but that did not dampen the incredible support along "the way" and crossing the finish line in front of the state capitol. Watch the YouTube video where I break down the California International Marathon course, here.
DGR Group Run: A Prelude to the Main Event
The marathon weekend commenced with an uplifting group run, led by Seth DeMoor himself, and a GoPro in tow of course. This shakeout run, set against the backdrop of Sacramento's scenic American River route, provided an excellent opportunity for DGR team members and local runners to interact, share training stories, and build camaraderie. The enthusiasm at the group run was palpable after a long training block for many of the marathon racers. And if Seth's trivia questions were answered correctly post-shakeout run, those attending won customized DGR Bib Boards for securing the CIM bib onto their racing singlet or shirt the next day.
Expo: A Hub of Inspiration
The expo preceding the race was a convergence point for marathon enthusiasts. It was more than a collection of booths and merchandise; it was a celebration of marathon racing culture. DeMoor Global Running’s presence was notably present, with many selfies and smiles shared. Down the line at other USA marathon expos, we plan to share our gear for the world to test and see. Seeing runners united under one banner, the DeMoor "D", is a unifying sign that our global running family is growing and strengthening. #DGRStrong
The Race Course: A Test of Endurance and Strategy
The California International Marathon course, known for its fast and slightly downhill elevation profile, is a magnet for runners seeking personal bests or qualification times for other major marathons, like Boston. DeMoor Global Running racers tackled the course with strategic patience, balancing personal awareness with late-race speed, resulting in many Personal Records (PR) for DGR racers. Congrats to all the racers who snagged a PR or BQ at CIM, we salute you! This was not the case for Seth. Pre-race plans were to maintain a 5:20/mile pace for as long as possible, the "rollers" in the first 13 miles won the day. By mile 18 the quads were on the way out for this marathon, and by mile 22, the pain cave completely took over. Despite not hitting A or B goals, Seth did manage to snag a Boston Qualifier for 2025! See you there?
Finish Line: A Celebration of Achievement
The energy at the finish line was nothing short of electric for the California International Marathon finishers. Not to mention delicious burritos or a bowl of oatmeal for all finishers! Every runner’s finish line crossing was a personal victory, celebrated with cheers and applause from thousands of enthusiastic spectators. For Seth and the DGR team, it was a moment of triumph, reflecting months of rigorous training and dedication. The positive energy was a testament to the passionate spirit of the marathon racing community.
Reflecting on the Marathon Journey
The 2023 CIM race was more than just a race for Seth DeMoor and the DeMoor Global Running team. It was a celebration of the spirit of marathon running—a testament to their passion, resilience, and the vibrant YouTube-running family they have built. As we look ahead to future marathons, the experiences in Sacramento will undoubtedly fuel their continued pursuit of excellence in both running and LIFE. That is the lasting gift of racing 26.2 miles, passion, and unrelenting drive for daily living after we cross the finish line, which is the actual starting line.
